Abstract

Introduction: Autism spectrum disorder is a neurodevelopmental condition that impacts communication and social interaction. This situation can represent a challenge for both the individual and their families, given that shared activities can be affected, including access to healthcare services. Currently, these patients face obstacles to receiving adequate dental care, either due to a shortage of dentists qualified to treat these conditions or due to professionals' insecurity when caring for these patients. Objectives: To identify the knowledge of students in the School of Dentistry at Visión de las Américas regarding the care of patients with autism spectrum disorders, in order to raise awareness within the university community and promote training strategies in this area. Materials and method: A descriptive study was carried out with a quantitative, observational design, whose sample was made up of 92 students belonging to the dentistry program of the Visión de las Américas institution, from the headquarters located in Medellín and Pereira, in the academic courses of eighth, ninth and tenth semesters during the first period of 2023, who decided to participate voluntarily, giving their consent for the research. Results: Ninety-two dental students were included, 70.6% of whom were women, aged between 20 and 42 years. A significant level of lack of knowledge about autism spectrum disorders was identified (31%). Regarding availability for these patients, half preferred the morning schedule. Opinions on the frequency of dental checkups varied, and some students' most common reasons for consultation were unclear. In terms of training, the majority did not feel prepared to care for this population, highlighting the need for improved training in this area. Conclusion: Proper training of oral health professionals is essential to ensure inclusive, high-quality care for patients on the autism spectrum. Proper preparation facilitates effective communication and a more rewarding experience for both the patient and the specialist and family members. It is recommended to implement training programs and develop protocols that enhance the skills of students and future professionals in caring for these patients, thereby promoting a more inclusive and humane dental practice
