Introduction: Dental caries is one of the most common diseases worldwide, which has led to the development of various preventive strategies such as silver diamine fluoride (SDF), acidified fluoride and fluoride varnish. SDF is notable for its bactericidal and remineralizing action, although it can cause a temporary metallic taste. Acidified fluoride, in the form of a 1.23% gel or foam, strengthens enamel, but requires professional supervision to avoid excessive ingestion. Fluoride varnish offers a simple and safe application, releasing fluoride in a prolonged manner. The choice of treatment depends on the individual needs of the patient. Objective: To analyze the advantages and disadvantages of silver diamine fluoride, acidified fluoride and fluoride varnish in the prevention and treatment of caries. Methodology: A literature review was carried out following the PRISMA guidelines, using the keywords silver diamine fluoride, fluoride varnish and acidified fluoride in databases such as PubMed, Scielo and ResearchGate. Results: Of the 50 records identified, 41 were excluded, leaving 9 eligible studies. Silver diamine fluoride stops caries but stains and affects adhesions. Fluoride varnish prevents caries, requires reapplication, and is hygiene dependent. Acidified fluoride reduces bacteria but can be toxic and damage restorations. Conclusions: Silver diamine fluoride, acidified fluoride, and fluoride varnish are effective options for preventing and treating caries, each with benefits and limitations.
