Abstract

Introduction: Sleep bruxism (SB) is a masticatory muscle activity during sleep that is characterized by being rhythmic or non-rhythmic and should not be considered a sleep or movement disorder on its own.

Objective: To review information from articles related to risk factors for sleep bruxism in children aged 3 to 12 years.

Methodology: The search strategy for articles was carried out in the following electronic databases: PubMed, Ebsco, Web of Science and Scielo. The descriptors: “children”, “preschoolers”, “bruxism”, “risk factors” and “sleep bruxism” were used in the search. The selection criteria included articles published from 2009 to 2020 in English and Spanish. Cross-sectional studies, cohort studies, case-control studies and randomized clinical trials that reported risk factors for SB in children aged 3 to 12 years were included. Two reviewers independently screened titles and abstracts. Abstracts considered relevant were then scheduled for full-text review. There were no discrepancies between the two reviewers in this review.

Results: After applying the inclusion criteria, twenty-two articles were included. Among the selected articles, there was no association between age and SB in children.

Conclusions: According to the available information, genetics, male gender, anxiety, psychological and emotional disorders, sleep characteristics and/or problems, and breathing difficulties are considered risk factors related to sleep bruxism in children aged 3 to 12 years. However, the association with malocclusions still needs further study.
