Abstract

Introduction: The anesthetic technique with the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) performed by fourth and fifth year students of the Dentistry program at the Andrés Bello University, Santiago, was compared.

The objective: It was to evaluate the execution and success of the technique prior to a simple tooth extraction.

Methodology: The students were invited to participate and signed a consent form. A survey was conducted containing an informative protocol for the student with the steps to follow, then, at the end of their clinical care, they had to answer a series of multiple choice questions.

Through this survey, it was evaluated how many students were able to achieve a correct block of the inferior alveolar nerve with only 1 tube of 2% lidocaine anesthesia and how many of these required additional anesthesia after having injected the first tube of anesthesia, before starting the surgical procedure.

The number of anesthetic tubes used by students to perform painless tooth extractions and how many required additional anesthetic reinforcement during the intraoperative period was also quantified. This allowed a comparative analysis between both generations of students in relation to the use of the anesthetic technique.

Results: Of the 104 respondents, it was found that 57% of the 4th year students and 65% of the 5th year students achieved a correct anesthetic technique at NAI with only 1 anesthetic tube.

Conclusion: There were no significant differences
with respect to the academic year and the variables studied, except for the need for anesthetic reinforcement after verification of a successful anesthetic technique, where the 4th year students needed to perform greater intraoperative pain control.
