Oral cancer in Costa Rica, from 2006 to 2010.

The following descriptive study analyzes the cases of oral cancer database of the National Registry of Tumors of Costa Rica, occurred during the years 2006 to 2010, which were analyzed by the behavior of epidemiological variables of time, place and person; measured frequency and non parametric statistics. The purpose of this article is to inform and promote the importance of prevention and early diagnosis of oral cancer in the country.
A total of 307 cases of oral cancer were registered according to the International Classification of Diseases ICD-10.
As part of the obtained results the ratio was 1.72 males for each woman with oral cancer. The proportional rate of oral cancer mortality was 8.98 deaths per 100,000 population and the rate of potential life years lost (PLYL) related to this case is 3.67 per 1,000 people under 75 years, with a survival expectancy of 8 months.
Oral cancer affects about 61 people per year, with a cumulative incidence of 68.24 per 1,000,000 inhabitants and a mortality rate of 48.19% of the cases, hence the importance that dentist possess tools that promote early detection improving prognosis, survival and quality of life.
