Abstract

The objective of this research is to identify the level of knowledge and advocacy that athletes participating in the X Central American Games in San Jose 2013 have about dental trauma. Concerning immediate measures to be applied in the case of a dental accident, they were given a survey that included questions about dental trauma.

Of those surveyed, 76% showed an inadequate level of knowledge when needing to detect trauma acquired through their sport activities during the time in competition. In conclusion, it is necessary to organize training courses for the athletes in order to increase the level of their knowledge in regards to preventing and reacting in this kind of emergency. At the same time, more preparation and advocacy is recommended for those organizing the events on this topic.
