Introduction: After plaque, the tobacco is the most important factor in the periodontal disease etiology;
but despite all the information we know nowadays, it has not raise awareness in people who consume it.
Objective: Analyze the perception of intake tobacco and it affection in periodontal tissues Material and
Method: 368 surveys were applied to smokers, men and women from different ages, in the city of Monterrey,
México. Outcome: We could notice that the men prevailed in a 58%; the ones who have noticed the changes
in their periodontal tissue; swollen gums, dental mobility, bad breath, and these are the ones who have been
smoking during at least 5 years; the 50% of the surveyed people are not aware of the damage that the cigarette
can produce on their teeth and in the oral cavity in general. Conclusion: We could conclude that most of the
people surveyed had noticed changes in their oral cavity, however we can also establish that it is necessary to
implement more and better education programs, more publicity to make smokers aware of the damages that
tobacco have on the periodontal tissue, and therefore aware of the oral manifestations they could have and how
to take care of their health.
