Publication Guidelines
The journal Odontología Vital accepts original manuscripts related to dental research that have not been published in other scientific journals. The study must be original and will undergo double-blind peer review at the editors' discretion. Manuscripts are typically between 6,000 and 7,000 words.
Manuscripts should be uploaded to the platform using the following link: https://revistas.ulatina.ac.cr/index.php/odontologiavital/about/submissions
Before submitting a manuscript for review, authors should read and understand the Peer Review process and the Open Access policies.
Important note: Manuscripts that do not meet the required format will be returned for correction. Additionally, the submission of a Letter of Originality is mandatory: Here, you must declare that the document is original, and each author must confirm that they collaborated on a minimum of 3 of the following processes:
- Funding
- Study Design
- Data Collection
- Statistical Analysis and Interpretation of Results
- Manuscript Preparation
Submission Deadlines
To be considered for Volume 1 (Published in March), you may submit your article until October 15th of the previous year.
To be considered for Volume 2 (Published in August), you may submit your article until March 15th of the same year.
Types of Articles
Original Research
Original research consists of thorough studies that report original results and are classified as primary literature.
Reviews
Reviews provide a critical and systematic evaluation of current scientific literature in order to offer a value judgment about that particular context, topic, or field.
Specialized Topics
The journal Odontología Vital welcomes proposals on specific fields of dentistry, which will be published in thematic dossiers.
Manuscript Preparation
First Page of the Article

1- Full names of all authors.
2- Institutional affiliation of each author, along with city and country.
3- Profession and highest academic degree of each author.
4- ORCID ID of all researchers.
5- Statement of authorship contribution. Information regarding the individual contribution of each author to the following elements must be included. This should be indicated using the author's initials, not their full names.
- Conceptualization and design:
- Literature review:
- Methodology and validation:
- Formal analysis:
- Research and data collection:
- Resources:
- Data analysis and interpretation:
- Drafting and preparation of the original manuscript:
- Writing, revision, and editing:
- Supervision:
- Project management:
6- Funding sources used for the research or similar information.
Information on potential conflicts of interest of the authors, i.e., any relationship or condition that could affect the objectivity of the article (both institutional and financial).
7- Email address of each author
8- Confirmation that the content of the manuscript has not been published or submitted for publication in [publication name missing]
9- All authors who participated in the development of the manuscript must sign the cover letter.
Document Length
Regarding the length of the work, the APA (American Psychological Association, 2010) suggests that research articles, case studies, and theoretical reviews have a maximum length of 10 pages, excluding tables, notes, and figures.
The author(s) will be solely responsible for the comments and opinions expressed in their work and release the journal Odontología Vital, the Universidad Latina de Costa Rica, and Arizona State University from any liability that may arise from the statements made in the publication.
Articles related to experiments on human subjects must be accompanied by a document of approval from the Ethics Committee of the institution where the study is conducted, in addition to informed consent. Data that could identify the study subjects, by name or characteristics, or by their image in photographs, should not be included, unless expressly authorized in writing by them, with the original document that must be submitted to the Editorial Board of the journal Odontología Vital.
Language
Currently, the journal Odontología Vital encourages authors to submit their manuscripts in both English and Spanish. A bilingual text allows more readers to access the published scientific information.
ORCiD
ORCiD helps researchers register and report their work by providing a unique identifier. Authors are encouraged to register with ORCiD and provide this information when submitting their manuscript for publication in Odontología Vital.
Repositories
The journal Odontología Vital welcomes submissions of articles deposited in a repository as preprints. Like any other manuscript, these preprints will be part of the review and peer-review process to determine their publication in this journal.
Authors are encouraged to use the SciELO preprint repository, which can be found at the following link: https://preprints.scielo.org/index.php/scielo
MANUSCRIPT REQUIREMENTS
Title: It is suggested that the title not contain names of cities or towns. It should include as many keywords as possible.
Abstract:
All manuscripts must include an abstract in Spanish and an abstract in English. The abstract should be approximately 300 to 500 words. In addition, the abstract should be divided into the following sections:
- Introduction
- Objective
- Method
- Results
- Conclusions
Four to six keywords should be included at the end of the abstract. For Spanish, the Health Sciences Descriptors (DeCS) are recommended, and for English, the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH).
Introduction: The purpose of the article is specified. The logical basis of the study or observation is summarized. The problem is identified, and the reasons for conducting the research are justified. The hypotheses and objectives are formulated, if relevant. Including a review of the scientific literature and a robust conceptual framework may be beneficial. The citation style for the journal Odontología Vital is APA.
Method: The selection process for the subjects observed or participating in the experiments is clearly described. All inclusion and exclusion criteria for the sample must be included in this section. The methods, equipment, and procedures used must be identified in sufficient detail to allow other researchers to reproduce the results. You must provide references for all accredited methods, including statistical ones. All medications and chemicals used must be detailed, including generic names, dosages, and routes of administration. In the case of literature reviews, search terms and the databases used must be included.
Whenever possible, references to study design should be from current works rather than original articles where the design was first described.
Results: The results should be presented in a logical sequence using text, tables, and figures that contribute to the clarity of the explanation. Limit the number of tables and figures to the minimum necessary to explain the article's central theme. Ensure that these are referenced within the text to guide the reader. Highlight or summarize only the most important observations. Describe your findings without including bibliographic citations.
Discussion: This section develops the researcher's contribution. You must explain your analysis of the results obtained and compare them with those found in other similar studies. Emphasize the new and important aspects of the study that emerge from the research. Do not repeat information and data presented in previous sections. Recommendations may be included where appropriate.
Conclusions: The answer to the research question(s) posed in the introduction that led to the design and execution of the work must be explicitly stated. Additionally, the limitations of the study must be included.
References: All references, listed alphabetically and without numbering, should be inserted in the text (not in footnotes) and in lowercase (except for the first letter), following the publication guidelines of the American Psychological Association (APA) as per: Manual of the American Psychological Association, Seventh Edition (APA Style Reference Link)
Clinical Case Report: Clinical case reports should be prepared in the following order: Abstract, Introduction, Keywords, and relevant Internet resources. Diagnosis - Epidemiology - Clinical Case Report - Patient's Personal Data - Chief Complaint - Medical History - Vital Signs - Dental History (Extraoral Examination, Intraoral Examination, Radiographic Examination) - Informed Consent - Treatment - Histological Examination or Pathology Report - Conclusions - Bibliography
Review Committee: We have a review committee comprised of reviewers from Dental Schools in Latin America and Spain.
Peer Review: More information at the following link: Peer Review System
The rejection of an article is not always due to poor quality. It may be because it is not relevant to the journal's topic, because it does not contribute significantly to the subject matter, because it is similar to another work published by the same author, among other reasons.
