Analytical article based on the documentary:“The Peni… The end of a disgrace”

This article presents a research study based on different sources and the documentary about the former Central Penitentiary of Costa Rica in San José, La Peni… El fin de una vergüenza. Its purpose is to analyze the harsh and violent living conditions faced by incarcerated individuals inside this prison. It also examines the lack of effective mechanisms and of a system aimed at social reintegration, as well as other critical aspects that shaped this stage in the history of the building. At the same time, the article points out the contradiction that this reality represented for a country recognized for its human rights discourse. Finally, it analyzes the institutional response to this problem and how the closure and transformation of the space reflected a change in the way justice, human dignity, and the penitentiary system were understood.
