socioeconómicos y culturales en los últimos veinte
años.
La Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS), a
finales de los 90, empezó a hablar del
envejecimiento activo, refiriéndose al proceso por
el que se optimizan las oportunidades de bienestar
físico, social y mental durante toda la vida a los
individuos como a los grupos de población, con el
objetivo de ampliar la esperanza de vida saludable,
la productividad y la calidad de vida en la vejez. Sus
principios permiten delinear los componentes del
envejecimiento activo para la actividad social que
ha de contribuir al bienestar individual, familiar,
comunitario y social.
El envejecimiento a nivel mundial es un hecho real
y trascendental que repercute en decisiones
políticas y en la demanda social.
Según datos de la Organización Panamericana de
la Salud (OPS), la población mundial envejece el
1,7% anualmente y se espera que para el año 2025
existan aproximadamente 1.100.000.000 de
personas mayores de 60 años en el mundo; de
este total, según el Centro Latinoamericano de
demografía, 82.000.000 estarán en América Latina.
(Lao, 2017).
Edentulismo
El edentulismo se define como la pérdida o
ausencia parcial o total de las piezas dentales en
la dentición permanente. Que por una u otra
razón fueron extraídas y no se reemplazan de
forma natural. Por lo general, el edentulismo se
produce de manera progresiva y por diferentes
causas; tales como, traumatismo, caries dental,
enfermedad periodontal y de origen congénito.
(Vanegas y cols, 2016).
La pérdida de piezas dentales afecta la integridad
del sistema masticatorio y, por ende, la persona
tiene secuelas a nivel estético y funcional,
generando problemas de autoestima, habla,
dificultad para tragar, problemas psicológicos y
sociales. (Von-Marttens y cols, 2010).
En un estudio realizado por Han y Kim, se reportó
que los pacientes edéntulos parciales o totales
que utilizaban prótesis removibles presentaban
un porcentaje de desnutrición del 12,8%, el cual
ascendía al 20% si no se utilizaba algún tipo de
prótesis. (Han SY, Kim CS. 2016).
Servicio de odontología en el Hospital
Dr. Raúl Blanco Cervantes
El servicio de odontología es uno de los servicios que
se ofrecen en consulta externa, en un horario de las
7 de la mañana a las 4 de la tarde. Anteriormente
únicamente existía un odontólogo, una asistente y
un técnico dentales. Actualmente, cuenta con
profesionales especializados en el área de
odontología general avanzada, prostodoncia y
periodoncia.
Es un servicio especializado que cuenta con 5
sillas dentales y que se encarga de atender los
pacientes adultos mayores de 60 y más años, los
cuales, deben ser del área de atracción o bien
estar medicamente comprometidos. Estos
pacientes pueden ser asegurados directos, por el
estado e indirectos.
Dentro de las prestaciones de este servicio, se
cuenta con periodoncia, cirugía oral menor y
mayor, dolor mio facial y trastornos de la
articulación dento- cráneo- mandibular y prótesis
no especializada.
